‘Clare, there is absolutely no way that I am going to let you go back to work.’

Professor Corbett was writing in her notes as he spoke, carefully documenting his findings and recommendations. He snapped the top of his fountain pen back in place with an air of finality. It’s now or never, thought Clare, plucking up her courage for one last-ditch attempt at a reprieve. She leant towards him.

‘My partners are really understanding. I’m sure they’d just let me do some short surgeries. There’d be no pressure on me to do house calls or anything like that…’

Her words tailed off to nothing as he turned to her and peered over the top of his glasses that were perched on the very end of his nose. His look said it all. This was a non-negotiable situation. Taking off his glasses and twirling them around with one hand, he sat back in his chair and pushed her notes to one side.

‘You are impossible, Clare. I know that you’re a very committed and gifted GP and I admire your determination to work if you can. However, not for the first time, let’s look at the facts before us. You are thirty weeks pregnant now. You’ve already had a fairly significant bleed. Your blood pressure is up and is higher today than it has been previously. You have oedematous feet and ankles and you’ve had to take your wedding ring off because your fingers are swollen also.’

Clare glanced down at the cheap costume jewellery ring that David had bought her to be a temporary replacement for her wedding ring. It was gold coloured with a row of large, imitation diamonds. She’d hoped the professor would not spot it.

‘I’ve seen it all before,’ he told her, reading her mind. ‘Luckily there’s no protein in your urine but there’s no way that we’re going to take any chances with you and your baby.’

Clare sighed. ‘I know you’re right. But I’m so bored just sitting at home on my own all day. Perhaps they could send some paperwork for me to do.’

‘You’re incorrigible. Perhaps they could send a few patients round and you could consult from the living room. Of course they can’t. You’ve got to face it, Clare, and get used to the idea that you will not be going back to work before the baby’s born.’

‘What if my blood pressure comes down?’ she asked optimistically.

‘Then we’ll be delighted and it will be proof that the rest is doing you good, so it must continue.’

Clare scratched her head and sighed, prepared now to capitulate.

‘Okay. You’re the boss. I’ll ring and let them know.’

‘Good girl. You’ve not that long to go. The time will fly past. Read all those books you’ve always wanted to read but never had time for.’

A look of disbelief fluttered across Clare’s face and he laughed.

‘It will. Make the most of it, when the baby arrives, you’ll have plenty to occupy your every waking, and most of your sleeping moments. Right, now I
